Builder Roy A. Hicks, who lived on Linden Street, built three houses on the west side of Somerset Road in 1927 (#s 14, 18, and 24).

21 Somerset Road was the home initially of Samuel and Ida Gorsey. Samuel Gorsey (1897-1992) was an accountant. Born in England -- his parents were born in Russia -- he came to the U.S. in 1905. Ida Gorsey, whose parents had come to the U.S. from Austria, was born c1902. They had a son, Charles. The Gorseys were listed at this address in the Street List from 1929 to 1933.

The 1930 U.S. Census listed the residents as: Samuel J. Gorsey, 32, accountant, born England; Ida B. Gorsey, 28; Charles B. Gorsey, 6; and Hannah Maguire, 22, maid. The house was valued at $16,000.

The next residents of this house were Sadie and Leo Flax, listed here from 1934 to 1938. Leo Flax (1901-1974) was a merchant. (In 1930, he was in the floor covering business, although it is not clear if that was still the case when he lived on Somerset.) He and his wife Sadie (1904-2000) moved to Newton after living in Brookline.

The last residents in the period covered by this survey were Paul and Jeanne S. Lerman, who moved here from Fuller Street. Paul Lerman (1892-1987) was a superintendent at a shoe factory. He and his wife Jeanne [or Jeannette] (1897-1999) had two sons.
