16 Hancock Road was the first of two houses on this street -- #15 across the street is the other -- designed by Royal Barry Wills and built by Maurice Dunlavy.
The first residents were Minnie and William Crockett who had lived nearby at 35 Gorham Road before moving here. William Crockett was born in England c1879 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1893. He was a salesman with a shoe machinery company. Minnie, born c1875, and William were married c1908. The Crocketts were listed at this address in the Street List from 1931 to 1943.
The next residents were Pota C. Henes and her daughter Mary, listed here from 1944. to teh early 1960s. Pota Henes (1887-1978) was born in Greece and came to the U.S. in 1910. She was married, most likely that same year. Her husband Christo had come to the U.S. nine years earlier. The 1930 U.S. Census showed the family owning a home in Revere where Christo was a cook at a beach stand. Mary was the youngest of their five children. Twenty-one years old when she and her mother moved to Brookline, Mary worked as a typist/stenographer.
